We are fully in Women’s World Cup Group Play season now, and how great it has been! We have soccer in the extreme dawn hours, through into having some to watch on the computer during your work day. I would try to make time to watch at least one of these, but either way, we are in for a treat as Matchday Two continues. Here are some plays for Thursday’s slate!
Thursday’s Best FIFA Women’s World Cup Picks
Portugal vs. Vietnam
After being blanked by the Dutch, the Portuguese team gets a chance to let their frustration out on a Vietnam squad that’s form could be described as nothing less than pitiful. They have lost five straight matches, losing the last five first halves, and scoring two goals over that stretch (compared to 18 allowed). With Portugal looking to get their form right and goals normally not being an issue, I think they will be in complete control of this one from the opening whistle.
The Pick: Portugal to win both halves (+105)
Australia vs. Nigeria
Looking at the statistics and the final score tell two different stories of the opening match for this Australian squad, who took down Ireland 1-0, while controlling 63% of play and having a significant advantage in all major offensive statistics. They have a tall task against a Nigerian squad that will play them extremely physically and is more experienced than the Ireland squad that they faced. Canada was -250 to win against Nigeria and you could just tell that they chose to stack the box and park the bus to get to the 0-0 result. As Nigeria has now not lost in four straight matches, I think that there is some value in Nigeria to have a result.
The Pick: Nigeria Double Chance (+190)
Argentina vs. South Africa
South Africa was on the verge of something historic in their last match, before Sweden showed up and showed why they are one of the best teams in the entire field. Nonetheless, it is hard to say I am not impressed. With that being said, they have another tough task ahead with one-loss Argentina. Argentina is ranked 26 spots ahead of South Africa in the Women’s FIFA Rankings, and prior to Italy giving them a loss, their play was pretty inspiring. With them knowing that they need this one, I expect their striker to get them a crucial goal here and lead them to victory. Mariana Larroquette has scored a goal in eight of the last ten matches she was a part of, and I think this is a great chance for her to shine on the world’s brightest stage!
The Pick: Mariana Larroquette Goalcast (+374)
